Start of Velvet Elvis - 6pm

This Wednesday, August 1, we will begin Rob Bell's book Velvet Elvis. If you can't get a copy before then, the library has 7 copies, so you should be able to pick one up. Mikey Hannon really likes this book and has offered to lead our discussions. We eat a little something at 6pm, and the discussion lasts until around 8pm. Hope to see you at Nancy's house in Valley Forge!

Still finishing A Generous Orthodoxy

Wednesday, July 18th at 6pm, the saga of A Generous Orthodoxy discussion continues. We didn't get through discussions of the last three chapters, "Why I am Depressed-Yet-Hopeful", "Why I am Emergent" and "Why I am Unfinished." Please come prepared to answer the questions at the end of each chapter or at least take some interest in the conversation. It's been a great book. Denise says that the last chapter is her favorite! ;-)

May 2 - Why I am Fundamentalist / Calvinist

Hmmm .... McLaren asks us to keep the "fun" in "fundamentalist" and look at how the movement started, in the early 1900s, as a movement of unity and finding common ground. Calvinism involves similar types of foci, the bare bones around which we can rally. Look at the benefits of this kind of trimming, commonality and preservation of truth.

April 25 - Why I am Pentecostal / Contemplative

This is an interesting chapter where McLaren finds common ground and the strengths of learning from these two seemingly very different traditions. Worth serious discussion!

April 18 - Why I am Biblical

In Chapter 10, McLaren discusses the importance of continuing to study and follow Scripture.

April 11 - Why I am Mystical / Poetic

Instead of cathedrals of stone and stained glass, the Church during modernism built cathedrals of proposition and argument. In Chapter 9, McLaren argues that the church needs mystery and art as much as debate and reason. What does it mean to be "mystical?" Explore these ideas with us, April 11th.

March 28 - Why I am Liberal / Conservative

Can the categories of "Liberal" and "Conservative" be deconstructed? Is there another label? Chapter 8, we explore the strengths and weaknesses of each. Be prepared to question both and whether or not such boxes need exist.
